At the beginning of class, we used flashcards to review characters. Collectively, the students called out the character that the teacher presented. They completed all the characters in 3 minutes 29 seconds! Let's see if they can beat this score the next time we review! We also learned five new characters today. However, we did not have time to practice writing them.
For the latter half of class, we practiced our dance for the Chinese New Year performance, which is on 1/31. We ran through the dance several times and finalized the formation in which the students will stand. We really appreciate the students' hard work!
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the holidays and started off the new year well! It was wonderful seeing everyone back, ready to take on the second semester! It was fun to hear everyone sharing their favorite part of the winter break. To refresh the students memories, we began class with a mini quiz. Students were asked to write characters they have learned in the previous semester. Some students were able to recall most of the characters, while others struggled more.
Afterwards, students were put into pairs. As the students sat in a circle, each pair was asked to read out the characters the teacher presented on flashcards. The pair that accurately read out all of the flashcards in the shortest time won! Competition was intense as many students performed very well!
Next we read lesson 12 from the textbook. We read through the little poem--about a child playing with a rubber ball and counting with Dad--several times. Some students were even able to memorize the text!
In the last twenty minutes of class, the other first grade students came over to our classroom. Together, we practiced the dance which we will perform at the Chinese New Year's festival. If they have time, students should practice at home!
